Track-induced noise is most noticeable during straight-line travel on hard surfaces and skid steering. Conversely, on soft or uneven terrain, track machines often run smoother and quieter than their wheeled counterparts.

Engine Exhaust Noise: Diesel combustion and exhaust pulsation remain primary noise drivers.
Cooling Fan Aerodynamic Noise: High-speed fan rotation generates substantial air turbulence noise.

Sprocket teeth engaging the track drive lugs generate the characteristic rhythmic clatter during travel. Industry patents specifically note that rigid impact between drive sprockets and rubber track lugs generates localized noise; optimizing tooth geometry and widening sprocket shoulders mitigates these contact impacts. Steel tracks amplify this impact noise significantly compared to rubber tracks.
As track rollers and idlers roll across hard surfaces like concrete or asphalt, they create a low-frequency rumbling sound. On soft ground—such as soil, gravel, or snow—this sound is absorbed and minimized. As industry specs note: Wheeled loaders typically run quieter on smooth, hard surfaces, whereas track loaders produce noticeable ground rumble under the same conditions.
Executing a pivot or skid turn on hard pavement causes ground scrubbing. While both wheeled and tracked machines experience this, the larger contact patch of a track pad creates a more pronounced, heavy scraping sound.
