What should I do when operating a skid-steer loader in hot weather?

Daily Pre-Operation Inspection (Critical)

  • Clean the Radiator: The engine radiator and hydraulic oil cooler on skid steer loaders are typically located at the side or rear. In dusty environments, they can easily become clogged with grass clippings and dust. Use compressed air daily to blow out the debris from the inside out to ensure proper airflow. If there is heavy oil buildup, use a low-pressure water wash. Never use high-pressure water, as it can bend the radiator fins.

  • Check Fluid Levels: Check the coolant, hydraulic oil, and engine oil levels while the machine is cold. Ensure all levels are within the specified dipstick/sight glass markings. Always use standard ethylene glycol long-life coolant; never top up with tap water.

  • Inspect the Fan Belt: Press down on the belt to check tension; a deflection of 10 to 15 mm is ideal. Replace the belt immediately if it shows signs of aging or cracking.

  • Tire Maintenance: In hot weather, tire pressure can be set 5% to 10% lower than the standard rating (refer to your manual) to prevent blowouts caused by pressure spikes under the midday sun. Inspect tires daily and replace them immediately if you notice any bulging or deep cracks.

Operating Guidelines in High Temperatures

  • Monitor the Dashboard: Normal engine coolant temperature typically ranges between 80°C and 90°C, while hydraulic oil temperature should ideally stay between 50°C and 80°C. If the coolant temperature approaches 95°C or the hydraulic oil temperature exceeds 85°C–90°C (triggering alarms), reduce the workload immediately or park the machine in the shade and let it idle to cool down.

  • Avoid Continuous Heavy Overloading: Skid steer loaders experience high resistance during pivot turns. Avoid prolonged, full-load compound movements (such as simultaneous high-lifting and sharp turning) in extreme heat. Allow the machine to idle and cool down for 10 to 15 minutes every 1 to 2 hours of continuous operation.

  • Shift Working Hours: When ambient temperatures exceed 35°C, try to schedule operations during the cooler parts of the day (early morning and late evening), avoiding peak sun exposure between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

  • Operator Comfort and Safety: Verify that the cabin air conditioning is functioning efficiently. Ensure operators have access to plenty of drinking water to prevent heatstroke.

Overheating Emergency Protocol

  • Engine Overheating (Boiling Risk):

    Step 1: Immediately reduce the machine's workload.

    Step 2: Let the engine idle for 2 to 5 minutes to allow the temperature to drop gradually.

    Step 3: Shut down the engine.

    • CRITICAL: Never shut off the engine immediately when it is overheating, as this can cause the pistons to seize (cylinder scoring). Never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot to avoid severe burns from spraying boiling coolant. Wait for it to cool, then use a thick towel to slowly loosen the cap and release the pressure.

  • Hydraulic Oil Temperature Alarm: Stop high-load operations immediately. Let the engine idle so the hydraulic oil can circulate through the cooler to reduce its temperature. Check if the hydraulic oil level is too low, if the return filter element is clogged, or if the cooler core is blocked by debris.

  • Thermal Shock Warning: Never spray cold water directly onto a hot engine, radiator, or tires. Sudden temperature drops can crack the engine block or deform the tires.

Summer Maintenance & Adjustments

  • Fluid Selection: Switch to a summer-grade engine oil (such as 15W-40 or 15W-50, depending on your manual). For hydraulic systems, use HM46 or switch to HM68 in extremely hot climates. Shorten the replacement intervals for hydraulic oil and filters by 20% to 30% during the summer.

  • Air Filters: Air filters clog much faster in hot, dusty summer environments. Increase the frequency of cleaning and replacing the air filter elements.

  • Battery Maintenance: Battery electrolyte evaporates faster in high temperatures. Check the electrolyte level weekly and top it up only with distilled water. Keep the battery terminals clean and free of corrosion.

  • Rubber Components: Frequently inspect hydraulic hoses, seals, and wiring harnesses for signs of aging or cracking, as extreme heat accelerates the hardening and degradation of rubber and plastics.
