Types of Skid Steer Loaders

Release Date: 2026.03.20

1. By Undercarriage Type

This is the most fundamental classification.

Wheeled Skid Steer Loaders

Features:
Wheeled skid steers typically use four-wheel drive, offering high travel speed, excellent maneuverability, and true zero-radius turning. They are well suited for hard, finished surfaces and can move quickly between job areas.

Best for:
Municipal work, road maintenance, indoor construction, warehousing, landscaping, and other jobs on firm, paved, or level ground.

Advantages:
High mobility, strong operating efficiency, and relatively low maintenance costs.

Track Skid Steers / Compact Track Loaders (CTLs)

Features:
These machines use rubber tracks instead of wheels, providing a larger ground contact area and lower ground pressure. They deliver better traction, flotation, and stability on soft, muddy, uneven, or sloped terrain.

Best for:
Construction sites with soft ground, farms, wetlands, hilly areas, landfills, and other challenging off-road environments.

Advantages:
Superior traction, reduced risk of getting stuck, and better stability in difficult ground conditions.

2. By Lift Path Design

This classification mainly affects lift height, reach, and intended applications.

Radial Lift

Features:
Radial-lift machines follow an arcing lift path. They provide strong breakout force and excellent reach at mid-level lift heights, but their maximum lift height is typically lower than that of vertical-lift models.

Best for:
Digging, grading, earthmoving, trench cleanup, and loading or unloading at lower heights.

Advantages:
Simpler structure, strong digging performance, and lower overall cost.

Vertical Lift

Features:
Vertical-lift machines raise the loader arms in a more vertical path, allowing for greater lift height and longer reach at full lift. The load stays closer to the machine as it rises, which improves stability when handling heavier materials.

Best for:
Truck loading, pallet handling, stockpiling, and other applications that require higher lift and better reach at full height.

Advantages:
Greater lift height, improved efficiency in truck loading, and better performance in heavy-duty material handling.

3. By Power Source

Diesel-Powered Models

Features:
Diesel skid steers offer strong power output, long operating endurance, and reliable performance in demanding environments. They are typically designed to meet regional emissions standards such as Tier 3, Tier 4, or Stage V.

Best for:
Outdoor jobs, remote worksites without charging infrastructure, and heavy-duty applications requiring long continuous operation.

Advantages:
High power, long runtime, and dependable performance under tough working conditions.

Electric Skid Steers

Features:
Electric models produce zero on-site emissions, lower noise levels, and require less maintenance. They also provide smooth, responsive control, making them ideal for enclosed or environmentally sensitive areas.

Best for:
Indoor renovation, food and pharmaceutical facilities, underground projects, warehouses, and municipal sanitation work.

Advantages:
Environmentally friendly operation, lower operating costs, and smoother machine control.

Hybrid Models

Features:
Hybrid skid steers combine an internal combustion engine with an electric drive system, balancing power output with improved fuel efficiency. Some models may also support limited all-electric operation in certain conditions.

Best for:
Applications that require both strong endurance and reduced emissions.

Advantages:
A practical balance of performance, efficiency, and environmental benefits.
