Technically, you can run it over a field, but it is not recommended for clearing brush. Skid steer brooms are designed for sweeping dust, gravel, and surface debris from hard ground. Using them for land clearing is ineffective and highly likely to damage the attachment.
Lack of Cutting Power: Whether equipped with poly or wire bristles, a sweeper is designed for friction and flicking, not cutting. It lacks the blades or hammers necessary to sever or mulch woody stems.
Entanglement & Structural Damage: Brush and long grass will quickly wrap around the brush head (the core). This creates immense tension that can stall the hydraulic motor, snap bristles, or blow seals due to overheating.
Ineffective Results: At best, a broom will only "comb" the leaves off or flatten the weeds. It cannot remove root systems or thick stalks, leaving the field essentially uncleared.
If you are using a skid steer to clear overgrown fields, brush, or saplings, the following professional-grade attachments are much better suited for the job:
Forestry Mulcher: The gold standard for land clearing. It features a high-speed rotor with teeth that shred brush, small trees, and stumps into fine mulch in a single pass.
Brush Cutter (Rotary Cutter): Equipped with heavy-duty blades, these are designed to mow through thick grass, heavy weeds, and woody brush up to several inches in diameter.
Root Grapple / Root Rake: Ideal for pulling brush out by the roots and clearing the land completely rather than just cutting the surface.
Dozer Blade: Useful for pushing over larger brush and leveling the ground once the vegetation has been managed.
